BATTERY
Battery involves physical contact with another in a manner likely to cause bodily harm. Typically the prosecution must prove three elements in order to prove that battery has taken place.
First there must be an illegal appliance of force, directed at another person, and resulting in an injury or unlawful touching. Injury is not a necessary consequence in proving this crime, the physical contact can be sufficient under most circumstances.
As such there are many degrees of battery, ranging from simple battery to aggravated battery. The intent to harm must be present, and depending upon the damage done to the other party the penalties will range greatly, usually resulting in a felony charge.
If you are charged with battery you must retain an experienced lawyer to represent you. Aside from the penalties you will face if convicted, which are severe, there are potential civil suits you may have to face down the road particularly if you are convicted.
