Prosecution refers to the government, or state's, case against the lawbreaker.

A prosecutor is the lawyer presenting the government's case. Prosecutors have complete discretion in deciding whether to bring a charge against an alleged offender, and which specific charges will be filed. They must prove all charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
