WHY HIRE A DEFENSE ATTORNEY
Many people question the necessity of hiring an attorney in the first place. The thinking is either that if you qualify, having a public defender is just as good, or that one attorney is just as good as another to defend against a run-of-the-mill criminal charge.
A public defender should be an option of last resort. The only time you should allow a public defender to handle your case is if you have exhausted all of your options in securing the fee for a private attorney, and simply cannot afford it.
While public defenders can be great lawyers in their own right, they are simply overworked, and your case is just one in well over a hundred that they may be handling at any given time. They simply do not have the time to provide you with the best defense a private attorney could.
One attorney is not just as good as another. Experience and skill can account for the difference between a dismissed case and jail time. Experience in negotiation is one of the most important aspects a criminal defense lawyer can possess, which comes usually from experience. Never hire an attorney thinking that experience doesn't matter.
